Ship Lift Niederfinow
Visitors from all over the world today admire the unique memorial of German technological history.
For 20 years lock stairs near Niederfinow served to overcome 36 m incline of the Oder-Havel canal, before the ship lift took over this work in 1934. The massive steel construction, compensating weights which weigh tons, thick steel ropes, the almost silent movement of the giant trough and the low energetic movement it requires are the attractions of this unique technological spectacle. From the visitors' platform the visitors have a view of the lower Oder fault, the heights of Falkenberg and Liepe. In the next few years Niederfinow will be able to offer even more attractions through the construction of a second ship lift and a modern information centre. Several passenger ships offer sightseeing tours around the Oder and the Finow canal. A hotel and restaurants spoil their guests with specialities from Barnim.
