Experience culture in the region

Do you enjoy culture?

The world of nature offers numerous good opportunities to experience history directly, to visit attractive places of interest or to enjoy top-class culture events.

Did you know for example that the second biggest tobacco-producing region in Germany is situated between Schwedt and Gartz? The Huguenots brought tobacco growing to the Eastern Uckermark in around 1700. The many tobacco barns on the surrounding fields are witness of the long tradition of growing, which has continued to exist until today and whose history can be seen in the tobacco museum in Vierraden. Every year the Uckermark tobacco places its fragrant mark on the tobacco blooming festival which takes place in late summer, which does not just attract those who enjoy the tobacco plant.

Besides the Huguenots the Swedes and the Hussites also left their historic mark on the world of nature.

It was in 1630 when the legendary Swedish King Gustav II. Adolf landed on the Island of Usedom with his troops in order to intervene in the Thirty Years' War. Until 1815 the Kingdom of Sweden ruled over parts of Northern Germany. This moving era can still be seen today on the "Schwedenstraße" (www.schwedenstrasse.de), a road which leads through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and The Uckermark. King Gustav II. Adolf arrived at his camp here near Schwedt (Gustav-Adolf memorial stone, Huguenot Park, St. Katharine Church) and resided in Prenzlau (Marien Church, Dominican Monastery) where the remains of the monarch were laid out for two days in the Marien Church in 1632.

Bernau with the Hunger Tower at the stone gate and the museum Henkerhaus is the town of the Hussites. Until today, the residents are proud that their ancestors succeeded in defending an attack of the Hussites against the town in 1432 and sending them on their way permanently. Thousands of visitors come to the town before the gates of Berlin every year when the residents of Bernau bring 700 years of history to life at their Hussite festival.

Besides Bernau there are further towns in the region, the historical roots of which can still be seen today. Particularly worth a visit are the historical city centres of Templin and Angermünde, the old town walls of Fürstenwerder and the numerous attractions of the town of Eberswalde (brass work settlement, museum in the Adler pharmacy, forest botanical garden and zoo, family garden).

It has nothing to do with just looking as far as the village church if we recommend you to also visit one of our old churches on your cultural journey. Visit the little church in green surroundings in Alt Placht, the fieldstone church in Lychen or also the village churches in Liepe, Prenden and Tuchen, listen to the sounds of the Wagner organ in the Angermünde Marien Church and climb the towers of the Marien Church in Prenzlau.

Are you also one of those people who believe that large cultural events can only be found in large towns? We can prove the opposite! After all, the world of nature is well-known beyond its borders for its excellent cultural programme. The Chorin music summer in the Chorin Monastery, the productions of the Uckermark stages Schwedt or also the chamber music festival in Groß Dölln are just a few examples of cultural events of the extra class, which you can experience every year and should not miss.

Be relaxed and enjoy the culture through town and country and allow yourself to be enchanted by the historical and modern creativity of the world of nature. Take the opportunity and also pass by our Polish neighbours. The old town of Stettin (Szczecin) with the castle of the Pommern Dukes and the Haken terraces are just as enchanting as the Middle Age town fortification of Greifenhagen (Gryfino) or the Augustine Monastery in Königsberg (Chonja).
